this little christmas advent garland

if you know us over here at this little house, you know we're a fan of a garland :)

see are most recent ones here and here.

i knew i wanted to make caleb's advent calendar this year, but wasn't sure what i was going do. i then came across the cutest mini numbered pegs which sealed the deal that it would be an advent garland.

i raided my christmas wrapping box for supplies...

and then i got to work...

1. i cut the brown paper into 24 individual strips.

2. folded in half

3. attached festive washi tape either side to create a pocket

4. personalised each pocket with festive words using the letter rubber stamps.

5. filled each pocket with a chocolate treat.

6. attached a length of bakers twine to the wall and then hung each pocket with a numbered peg.

and ta da...

this was so easy to do and is also a great addition to the christmas decorations in our home too, yay!

december we are ready for you!!! :)

it's that most wonderful time (nearly!)...

okay so i dared to use that word in october.

(i nearly wrote that sentence as, i dared to use the C word. my, how that sentence would have changed the tone of this post!!)

now surely with the end of november drawing near i can bandy it about freely??! no, get that other word out of your head, i mean....

christmas, christmas, christmas!! ;)

yes, christmas has arrived in edinburgh. in all it's european market, ice skating, mulled wine, overpriced rides, glory.

i'm a sucker for all things christmas. yes, i'm one of those annoying people who puts up their tree early.

like the end of this week early.

that's not so bad is it?? come on people, sunday is 1st december after all.

in my defence i have a good friend visiting for an early christmas visit, so i want it to feel festive. who am i kidding though? i'm a christmas loving tree up in november kinda gal.

edinburgh's christmas market has had a face lift this year, which made checking it out all the more fun. first impressions? me likey. got me right in the christmas mood...

we highly recommend the laughing stock stall, they are sausage connoisseurs. i chose a hotdog sausage all the same, as i'm ridiculously classy like that ;) it's safe to say i'll be having another one of those bad boys before christmas is through.

no pictures of us you may note.

well that's because mine and michael's faces were smothered in mustard from our hotdogs. attractive i know, and caleb, well that's a whole other post.

it would appear caleb has hit the terrible two's early. he was in an atrocious mood from the offset, and as soon as he couldn't do what he wanted (ie. run out of the park, into crowds, and roads) he lost his s***, and you know that is simply delightful when you are in very public place ;)

caleb tantrum- 10  festive family fun- 0

a medicinal mulled wine helped though ;)

this little shop OPEN!

ahhhhh, i can't believe i'm actually typing this, but this little shop is now OPEN!!

i've chosen the site, etsy to sell my little houses. for those of you that don't know about etsy, you should (and for those that have, well you certainly won't need an introduction)!

it's a wonderful site that supports and hosts sellers of handmade/unique/vintage items. yes, pretty much my idea of heaven.

my little houses, were born out of a love for all things vintage inspired and unique. all the papers used are sourced with great love and care, and the unit itself has an antique white finish which compliments the grain of the wood.

they are perfect for a little ones room or around the house, to hold all your little trinkets and treasures. what makes them special is that no two are exactly the same, add to that how you choose to style your house, and you have a truly unique feature hanging on your wall or freestanding.

would you like hooks added to the base of your little house? perfect to hang jewellery, hanging decorations or that treasured first babies onesie/dress/cardigan. simply add base hooks at the check out.

so here i am, pretty much cutting my shops virtual ribbon with my virtual scissors ;), and saying welcome everyone!

* i'm new to this whole selling malarky so ALL feedback is greatly appreciated. if you have any questions please leave a comment, or you can email me at thislittlehouse@gmail.com. for all international buyers please email for postage prices :)

* also, thank you to everyone for entering our Stuck On You Giveaway. congratulations to our winners, jessica and brooke :) we have emailed you both.

thank heaven for weekends

last week pretty much kicked our butt.

we had an appointment that didn't go exactly to plan.

my wisdom tooth that is taking it's sweet time to come through decided to get infected. yes, a whole world of pain right there.

and caleb, well caleb caught himself a lovely virus. a virus that decided to kick in at 5am friday morning. just in time for the weekend :(

we were about to write off our weekend, but caleb bucked up loads on the saturday afternoon, so we decided to have a little family walk around town.

i love nothing better than wrapping up warm and walking in the cold, autumn sun. throw in a hazelnut coffee, and you've got a very happy girl on your hands. especially when my walking buddies are these two...

the park was filled with caleb's shrieks and giggles chasing his daddy. a sight and sound i know i will never get enough of.

my turn to now chase after the little tinker. that is what i love most about weekends, tag team parenting. one gets to catch their breath while the other runs around like a loony, and then of course there are the times were we are all running around like loonies ;)

oh hello, handsome :)

so now it's monday, and there are no monday blues here. caleb virus...gone! my wisdom tooth infection...gone (please god stay that way)!

this week is to be a busy and productive one. that is the plan at least ;)

have a lovely week everyone :)

why this little house??

so why the name, this little house, for our blog? you see as you might have noticed already we don't live in a little house. we don't live in a house at all. we live in an apartment.

yes my lovely friends, that is called edinburgh living for you.

if you are in a house, you are as good as in the money ;)

so why the name then you may wonder? (or not, but hey, let's pretend you have for argument sake. after all this is our little blog and we can pretend whatever we like ;)

the name, this little house, was born from a project i first started not long after caleb was born. that project is actually the image that makes up our blog header above. i decorate small house-shaped shelving with a mix of vintage, modern and unusual papers. they are perfect in a little ones room for storing their little nick-nacks and treasures. or your own of course. they can be mounted onto a wall or freestanding.

i started making them for family and friends and i loved seeing how each one styled them. it made me realise what a unique and personal feature they became in each room with not two peoples the same. the feedback and the interest i received about them was lovely but then of course life happened, and making the little houses grounded to a halt.

as you may also have noticed (or not, but you know the drill just go with me here ;) just below our blog header in the subtitles you can see that one is, this little shop. pah, this little empty, pathetic shop more like.

well that in the next coming weeks is hopefully going to change and instead of clicking through to coming soon (also known as the most vague promise ever!), you will click through and see my little houses for sale. yay.

i have to admit it's a bit scary putting a product out there that you have made and love, and then expecting other people to part from their hard earned cash for it. the questions, why the hell would they? who's going to care? spring to mind, but with the help of this blog i'm getting over those anxieties.

being creative makes me happy, and makes me want to take a chance and put myself out there.

so now there's no turning back. it's time to get my butt into gear. my shizzle together.

wish me luck.

i think i'm going to need it with an active toddler, a part-time job, and a wisdom tooth infection. oh yeah did i mention that? oh the pain. like i needed another reason to keep me up at night.

(the above picture is only some of the many different papers that i decorate the houses with, i'm excited to use some of these lovelies on the next batch of houses)

a stuck on you kinda christmas

if you've been following our blog for a while now, you'll know we're big fans of the company, stuck on you. they are the kings of personalised gifts, and i have to say we're a bit crazy in this little house for anything personalised, especially with a name like caleb. yep, it is not the easiest name to find personalised gifts for on the high street.

so for us this is a must shop for this coming christmas, and this my friends is exactly why....

find me something cuter than a toddler in pyjamas.

i'm telling you it can't be done.

cutest. thing. ever

hmmm mama that be my name on my top...

....and my tush!

i adore these personalised pj's. the fit is lovely and and they're super soft too, and seriously that pocket detail on the back?? kills me.

oh and when i say personalised, i mean it to the finest detail. you choose the design, the colour, the font. what's also great is you buy the top and the bottoms separately, perfect if your child doesn't fall under a standard size. (caleb is 19 months old and is wearing size 2 in both, which fit him nicely but still with room to grow)

i grew up with the tradition of new pj's to open up on christmas eve, and it is something i'll definitely be doing for caleb. a tick can go next to that job :)

next up on christmas traditions, everyone needs a stocking.

it's time for caleb to bid goodbye to his baby's 1st christmas stocking (sob) and say hello to this new jumbo stocking (yay)...

i can't wait to fill this with lots of little fun stocking fillers.

caleb, meanwhile was a big fan of the santa graphic and his name.

stuck on you also offer lots of great ideas for stocking fillers too. this mat is perfect for my little man who seems to make a mess wherever he goes these days.

whether it's food, paint, crayons, crafts this mat will protect my dear furniture from it all :)

again, caleb was fascinated by the fact it had his name on it, which i can only see as a good thing for helping him recognise his name in the future.

yes mama, can i help you??

as you can see this really is your one stop shop for anything personalised. there will be no mistaking caleb this christmas that's for sure;)

*this is a sponsored post and i was kindly sent the stuck on you items that are pictured above free of charge. all opinions however are my own. if it's a yay or a nay i will always write honestly :)

pumpkin picking scotland style

pumpkin picking post in november?

well of course because if you've been reading this little blog lately you'll know we're making a bit of a habit of being behind.

in fairness i had every intention of posting this the week of halloween, but when we went pumpkin picking i thought it would be wise to take a camera with no charge.

yes, i really am clever like that.

lucky for me i had grandma liverpool with us and her fully charged camera. unlucky for her it's took her the best part of a week trying to get these to download onto her computer so she could email them to me. thanks/sorry, grandma liverpool :)

so back to pumpkin picking...

pumpkins to me are the american's halloween. i grew up carving turnips. ever carved a turnip? bloody hard i tell you and god the smell when you lit them. not. pretty.

to me pumpkin picking played like an american movie in my head. autumn (fall, LOVE how it's called fall) sunshine, giggles and laughter, and all that jazz.

reality.

freezing cold. raining. my american movie forgot the location was scotland.

a cranky, sooooo not interested 19 month old.

and man, no one told me the stems of pumpkins are like little mini cacti! ouch.

yeah the stuff that movies are made up of ;)

what cracks me up is i love the pictures. pictures really can tell a different story, huh?!

i guess we'll file this under pull your head out of your american movie ass and enjoy the flawed reality. warts and all ;)

ahoy me matey!

posting on a saturday. whaaa??? yes that is exactly how this week has gone. behind. behind. behind.

so, happy belated halloween! i hope you had fun whatever you did and of course made sure to eat your body weight in candy. we did.

my favourite thing had to be dressing up a certain little man as a pirate, apparently drawing on a fake moustache can induce fits of giggles. from both parties.

yes my little pirate that is exactly what your mama did :)

don't worry i won't be giving up my day job anytime soon to become a face painter!

we finished halloween off with a little mini trick or treat in our apartment block, which pretty much consisted of caleb proudly strutting about in front of the neighbours, passing the treats to us and then waltzing into their homes to locate....yes you guessed it....their phone.

hmmm we'll have to work on your trick or treat technique for next year, caleb.

ah next year.

i by no means want to wish the years away but i'm so excited to share with caleb the wonderful memories i have of halloween growing up, so much too show you and fun to be had, my boy. but i'll stop thinking about tomorrow and instead enjoy my little pirate now.

enjoy the rest of your weekend :)
